The Mundare Town Council decided to build a new town administration complex and had the foresight to realize that a community library should be included in their plans.

Patricia Tompkins, an elementary school teacher in Mundare offered to donate her personal library consisting of hard-cover fiction novels (obtained through years of membership in the Doubleday and Book of the Month clubs since 1965).

In the fall of 1994 volunteers delivered approximately 2000 books to the 'empty' room which was to house the library. Ms. Tompkins donated shelving as well as her collection of Time-Life series for a resource section. Through generous donations from the community of Mundare, books were donated and money was raised.

Bernice Poczynek and her daughter, Cordelia volunteered countless hours setting up the library.

The Mundare Library opened on December 19, 1974.

The founding member of the library board:  Charles Gargus (president), Faye Ewanchyshyn (secretary), Bernice Poczynek (treasurer), Cordelia Poczynek (librarian), Gloria Balla, Caren Bilyk, Lois Zyla, Cheryl Zeleny, Patricia Tompkins, Josephine Lesoway, Gwen Polomark, and Irene Talaga (town representative) served on the first board.

The executive and directors established by-laws, and policies, obtained grants and donations as well as obtained computers to allow library patrons access to the internet.

In 2006 The Mundare Library joined the Northern Lights Library System (NLLS).

On January 17, 2007, a ribbon-cutting ceremony made the membership in NLLS official.

In 2019 the Mundare Municipal Public Library celebrated 25 years of service to the patrons of Mundare and surrounding areas.
